10 Thing Friday

1. It’s Veteran’s Day! Get out there and thank a veteran for their service and take some time to remember the sacrifices that those who have served, their families, and their pets make when a soldier is enlisted and after they come home.

2. A new trailer for The Crown!!! I don’t know how I forgot that Mathew Goode is playing Lord Snowdon!!! SQUEALLLLLLLLLL. Also, Philip whines on.

3. This is one of my favorite winter meals. It is beyond easy and I like to make it for the sole purpose of dipping thick slices of a nice crusty french loaf in it.

simple, totally uncompromised sauce

4. I saw Thor this past weekend and I LOVED IT SO MUCH. I did not care for the first two Thor movies at all, but this one was everything I hoped for. Taika Waititi delivered and Thor is finally an exciting super hero. Everyone seemed like they were having a great time and it was all so colorful. Tessa Thompson needs her own spinoff because she really was the MVP of the whole thing. THAT FACE.

5. “When Will the ‘Harvey Effect’ Reach Academia?” Not soon enough.

6. I finished Alias Grace this week and it was excellent. I could hardly remember what happened in the story since I have not read it since 1998, but the story was well-paced and tense. You can read an interesting interview with the writer (of the script, not the novel obviously) and producer, Sarah Polley, here. I highly recommend watching it!

7. Nutella changed its recipe and it is the END OF TIMES. You don’t mess with perfection!

8. We also watched Wind River this weekend and it was absolutely haunting to the point that I am still thinking about it daily. It is not haunting in a scary movie kind of way, but in a no one is keeping track of missing indigenous women kind of way. I wish the movie was less focused on Jeremy Renner, but it is still worth your time to watch.

9. It’s plaid footwear season!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

10. I’m in Yosemite for the long weekend, so check out my Instagram (Cely524) stories for beautiful views and hiking struggles reported from the front line!

  1. Gurl. That is exactly my favorite shoe from that Fug Girls’ collection. I even commented on it on their post how cute they are and that I might have to buy them.

Also! Eeee! The Crown! Eeee! Matthew Goode! I am all in.

  2. I changed my major in college because the department head skeeved me out (he was my advisor and I worked in his office). It wasn’t anything like the Harvey stories, it was all more in the gray area where you second guess if it’s in you’re head. I was 19 and didn’t really know what was acceptable in a professional setting but it put me on edge enough to realize if something was inappropriate there was no one I could talk to in the department or at my school. This is so important in male dominated subjects since I had no allies. Looking back that guy was definitely working up to something and I’m thankful I avoided it but I’m still pissed I had to change majors because it effected everything from my grad date to my current career.

    • Ugh, I’m so sorry. I feel glad to live in California because we have so many resources on campus, but unless a student tells someone, then we can’t get them the assistance they need and investigate the situation. We find out about so much harassment from a friend of friend because the student is so afraid to come forward. I’m so sorry you had to experience that and didn’t feel like there was a place for you to go. On the other hand, we just had one of these situations pop up this week, but the student claims she told someone and they did nothing: http://www.sacbee.com/news/politics-government/capitol-alert/article183704591.html

  3. Re: Tessa Thompson: I’ve loved her since Veronica Mars!!
Re: Wind River: Have you read The Round House? Sheds more light on similar stats and is even more haunting.
Also very, very sad to hear about Louis CK, but not really surprised by anything anymore.

    • Thank you for the recommendation! I am really angry with Louis CK and his sorry ass excuses. I’m sure he is freaking sorry now that his career is in jeopardy. And he gets a big BITCH PLEASE when he claims he didn’t realize it wasn’t okay to whip it out in front of female colleagues. I don’t care that you asked because you shouldn’t’ have even done that!

    • She was such a badass and so funny! The scene where the Valkyries are flying in to fight Hela was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen on screen.

  4. Have you ever read ‘The Last Season’ by Eric Blehm? I’m just re-reading now and the story of a park ranger in High Sierra is just so beautifully written it makes me feel as though I’m there.
