WTF Wednesday

Someone recently recommended a book to me and I replied, “Oh, I have that one on my list. I’m glad to hear you liked it.” She responded that she hadn’t read it, but it looks “so good.” Naturally, I assumed she meant that she had read about it or someone had recommended it to her, and it looked like it would be something she was interested in. Nope. She “doesn’t read like ever,” but the cover “seemed fun.”

I was also recently sent a draft of a formal event invitation that featured Arial script. ARIAL.

Sans serif fonts have no place on an invitation. Serif or script ONLY. I’m organizing a rally for font justice.

Seven weeks after Hurricane Maria, Puerto Ricans still can’t access programs that fed millions in Texas and Florida.” THIS IS SHAMEFUL.

One of the women who directly works with me is from Puerto Rico and her family is still there. She spoke to her dad the day after the hurricane passed over the island, but hasn’t been able to get in touch with him since. The rest of her family is trying to get to him to check on him, but physically cannot. This is outragous. Can you imagine not being able to find out if a parent is okay after SEVEN WEEKS??? WTF??

Nationally, it is estimated that teachers spend a total of $1.6 billion on school supplies each year. On average teachers spent nearly $500 with one in ten spending over $1000. The majority of my friends who are teachers work in schools that are in high poverty areas. I know they spend well over $1000 to ensure that their students have the supplies they need to be successful and to create a classroom environment that is inviting. It’s not a child’s fault that their parents can’t afford (or will not purchase) school supplies and it’s not a teacher’s fault that funding for education is still woefully inadequate. All of this is to say that the new Republican tax plan includes a proposal to eliminate the TINY relief that teachers get in claiming up to a $250 deduction on their federal taxes. WTF?? Our teachers and our students deserve far better than this, and it is shameful that teachers have to spend part of their already paltry salary on basic supplies.

Image result for teacher gifI saw someone recently comment that if teachers didn’t waste so much money decorating, then this wouldn’t be an issue. Personally, I think it’s important for students to be in an atmosphere that is inviting, interesting, and fun. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that some of my memories of my favorite teachers (particularly in elementary school) involved classrooms that were vibrant and festive. It was fun to learn and I was excited to be there. I am not stating that if you don’t go all out decorating your classroom then you are a bad teacher because I know that a lot of people truly do not have the time, money, or ability (I certainly couldn’t make anything even halfway nice), but I do think the classroom atmosphere matters. Also, students need Kleenex and pencils.

THE OTHER WIFE???? When I read who it was in the book I switched my Kindle off with pure rage. I knew that little bitch would be back! I still cannot believe that Jamie married her after she tried to get Claire burned at the stake. The little girls are precious and deserve a good dad, but WTF man? It also constantly infuriates me at how much of the drama in these stories is stirred up by a basic lack of communication. There is never a good time to drop that you have another wife, but Jamie waited way too long. I also appreciate what a total hater Jenny is. She has no time for this Return of Claire nonsense. She’s the best part of any scene she is in.

I was also furious when Claire decided to have a cliff-side chat about how maybe she should not have traveled back and that they weren’t meant to be after all. Girl, it’s been like a week. Cool your jets. Did you think it would be easy? You just plopped back into someone’s life after being MIA for 20 years. There was no way for that to be a simple situation. Also, OF COURSE Ian was kidnapped by pirates while they hashed out if Claire made a mistake. At least we are finally heading out on the high seas and the VOYAGE part of VOYAGER is happening.

I don’t see how we are going to get through all of the plots on plots wrapped in plots with a plot topping ahead in just five episodes.

  1. How is it possible that a tax plan that is supposed to help the middle class gets rid of the teacher supply deduction? Aren’t teachers in the middle class? Why would they target that? It makes no sense to me.

    • Right? And it is such a paltry deduction anyway. I can’t believe that teachers will lose their minuscule deduction, but billion dollar “churches” like Scientology get all the breaks in the world.

  2. Sans serif FOR LIFE!
    We are fighting.
Ariel is my fave. So clean and crisp!
I don’t know how we will work through this one, Seals…

    • Sans serif has its uses! I’m just saying that for formal invitations it isn’t the right style!

  3. I have mixed feelings about this season of Outlander… well, my feelings are mixed in the sense where I really really don’t like the direction the show is going. I finally have my copy of Voyager and I’m all caught up and a little beyond where the show is right now and I have FEELINGS!
#1) In the books, Claire and Jamie are not having all of this damn drama. Yeah, there have been tough times and times where they could have communicated better, but they’re not being outright dicks to each other. I invested several episodes of pure emotion longing for them to reunite. Can’t the show just let them be happy together?!?!
#2) I do love Jenny’s sass, but the whole time in Lallybroch felt so rushed to me. Jamie, Ian, and Jenny had this great talk in the book when Young Ian came home and then it… just didn’t happen. Then in the books Claire had time to process the news of Jamie being married. I get that they only have a limited time to get to all the major plot points, but why did we waste 6 episodes of Claire and Jamie being apart just to make the rest of the season crap!
Okay, glad I got all that emotion out. I obviously have very strong feelings about this. Hopefully I start liking this season better soon.

    • I also don’t get all the extra drama because there is ENOUGH OF IT as is with the situation. I wish they had split the book in half and let a lot of the people and plots develop over more time. The first episodes were filled with slow story development, then it was like someone hit fast forward. I am greatly worried at who they are going to mash all that remains into so few episodes. There is just SO MUCH drama left! And the last episode gave me whiplash with all of the stuff crammed into it. The big drama should have been the other wife and letting that unfold and watching how people dealt with it, but then they just crammed the Ian napping in the end. GRRRRRR.

      • I fully agree! Or they should have shortened the first few episodes since those felt like they dragged on forever. So far, I am not loving it. I am enjoying the book though! A lot of people have said that the story starts going downhill after this book so I’m trying to savor it haha

        • I really enjoyed Voyager a lot too! I did not like the two books after and have subsequently given up on reading the rest of the series. And I know they wanted to set up the feeling of “waiting” and how miserable it was, but they should have kept the pacing consistent across the season, added more episodes, or tackled less of the plot this time. I am super interested in how they are going to handle all of the insanity of the voyage and what unfolds upon their landing. One thing that I think they are doing better with in the the show than in the book is departing from the really awful racist caricature of Yien Tien Cho (Mr. Willoughby ). I hope they continue in that vein with his character.

  4. The only joy I am getting from this season of Outlander is complaining about how much I hate it and how far away it is from the book to my husband who is obligated to watch with me on Sunday nights.

    • It’s way too much for one season of a show with only 13 episodes. They really should have split it in two and give a lot of these storylines more air to breathe and develop.

    • If you want to get more joy out of it, I HIGHLY recommend the Fug Girls’ recaps. They have outdone themselves this season! The captions on the screencaps are hysterical, and the recaps are loaded with silly verse to go with that week’s theme.

      • Roxane Gay also has fabulous commentary in her Glamour Outlander recaps. My favorite line this week was “a total ye olde Maury episode.”

        • Really, you guys. This week’s recap just went up late yesterday, and is amaze-balls. Here’s just a taste:

So no one told you I was gonna stay away
          Your mom’s a joke, she’s broke, our sex life’s D.O.A.
It’s not my fault though; I’m just bored out here.
It’s more fun selling stolen booze than bedding Ghaire-comma-Leor”

I mean, there’s also a Jenny from the ‘broch reference. It’s gold, Jerry, gold! Give yourself some time – it’s long too:

          • I love anything that contains that sheer number of ALL CAPS feelings. They’re such fantastically clever writers!

  5. I agree with you politically on everything you’ve written about, but can’t get behind your distaste for sans-serif fonts. 🙂

    • Just on formal invitations! There is a time and place for san serif, but it isn’t there!

  6. I live for Jenny in Outlander; she is totally my spirit animal. She has no time for nonsense and she had a whole mess of kids — I am ON BOARD.

Also, things could be worse — it could have been comic sans.

  7. I usually love Jenny, but I felt like in this episode she was straight up unnecessarily bitchy. Like, give your brother a minute to figure things out before you bring a legit psycho into the mix mkay?

  8. As a teacher I can attest to all the money I and my co workers would spend. But we don’t go into the profession for the money but respect for education goes a long way. Now I always make sure my son’s teacher has everything they need or volunteer right away when they ask for things.
The new tax plan is horrible for many reasons. This write off is just one of many. I keep reading that Devos might resign. When is this hopefully going to happen?

  9. While I don’t have your hate for Arial on an invite, I do cringe every time I have to use a template at work that has Comic Sans in it. COMIC! SANS! In an official template!

As the offspring of two teachers (one of which was also the offspring of two teachers), the tax deduction issue infuriates me. They already work hours beyond what they are paid for. Give them their ****ing tax credit for buying items for their classroom! ARGH!

    • Comic Sans MUST DIE. And, God, give teachers a damn break. You’re not going to pay them enough or fund their schools properly, so at least let them have have a tiny bit of relief! Jesus. THEY ARE EDUCATING THE FUTURE.

  10. I have a book rec that I actually read! Did you ever get into His Dark Materials? I just read the prequel (or the new trilogy?) La Belle Sauvage and absolutely loved being back in Lyra’s Oxford!

    • Ooooooh. I read His Dark Materials forever ago (it feels like). I need to pick those back up and this new one too! Thanks!
